Superintendent's Notes

Parent FYI on “13 Reasons Why”

Recently much concern has been raised about the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why".  The series is based on a young adult novel by Jay Asher originally published in 2011.  The story focuses on a high school student who dies by suicide, leaving behind 13 tapes detailing why she took her own life.  Many mental health groups are concerned that suicide is romanticized throughout the film and that there is no discussion of mental health treatment options.  Additionally there are there are multiple other concerns that have been raised regarding the graphic portrayal of suicide and the films treatment of sexual assault, cyber-bullying, alcoholism and depression.  

We have notified our faculty and staff of the issues around this series.  Administration has had discussions about supporting our most vulnerable students.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to building staff should you be concerned about your child.  We continue to work with our faculty and staff so that they can spot signs of students in need of help.

Baby Sitting at the Town Meeting

The National Honor Society will offer free babysitting at Town Meeting.

Children must be toilet trained.  The students will play games with them, read to them and do arts and crafts. Parents can meet the National Honor Society students at 6:30 p.m. at the Fowler Auditorium.

SEPAC Workshop "Basic Rights in Special Education"

The Maynard Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC) will host a workshop on Basic Rights in Special Education on Wednesday, May 3 at Fowler School from 7 – 9 p.m.  (This is a rescheduled event from February.)

A presenter from the Federation for Children with Special Needs will conduct the workshop, full of information to help parents partner with their child’s school in important ways: to decide their child’s eligibility for special education, and to plan, make decisions about, and monitor their child’s progress in school. Come learn, ask questions, and be informed about special education laws. Federation workshops are free and open to the public.

Green Meadow PTO Fundraiser

The Green Meadow Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) has kicked off their Online Silent Auction on May 6, 2017 as part of the Tiger Trot. This is the biggest Green Meadow PTO fundraising event of the year.  The auction is open to the Maynard Public Schools community and can be found at the following link:


There are over 50 great items to bid on, so bid early and bid often!  American Girl doll, sports events, theater tickets, skating lessons, day trips, a fly fishing excursion,  and even a ride to school in a police car (just to name a few)!  All proceeds go directly back to the Green Meadow PTO to fund enrichment programs for all the students at Green Meadow.  The auction is open and will end with live bidding at the Tiger Trot on May 6.  You do not need to be present to win. MMA Fowler is in dire need of your participation.  If we are unable to fill the following positions for the 2017-18 school year as well as boost parent participation in our monthly meetings and events, this group will likely disband: Chair, Co-Chair, Treasure in Training, Secretary, and Webmaster.  Please email MMA at maynard.musicassoc@gmail.com if you are interested in becoming more involved..

Scholarship Readers: 
The MMA Scholarship Committee will be reviewing applications in mid May.  We are in need of additional readers.  If you do not have a child at the high school, please consider volunteering.  This is a 1-2 night commitment. Please email MMA at maynard.musicassoc@gmail.com if interested.

MMA Band/Chorus Banquet: 
This year's banquet is set for May 29th at 5pm at the Maynard Elks.  Tickets will go on sale soon.

All graduating band and chorus students should send a maximum of 10 photos and information on plans for next year for this year's video to Sandra Liu at sliuma95@gmail.com by May 8th.

Volunteers Needed:  
1. Programs and banquet tickets: to distribute and collect programs the night of the MHS band and chorus concert and sell tickets for the Senior Music Banquet.  Ticket sellers are also needed the evening of the Solo and Ensemble Night.

2. Memorial Day Parade chaperones: Volunteers are needed for the Memorial Day parade to meet students in the band room, walk the parade route and distribute water.

3. Music banquet volunteers: The Banquet Committee is seeking assistance on the day of the banquet to set up, serve food and beverages, and clean up after the event.

2017-2018 BUS REGISTRATION

Bus registration for the 2017-2018 school year will begin on May 1, 2017. 

NEW THIS YEAR: The deadline for registration is June 30.  Registration hours on May 1 will be 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Registration will take place at the administrative offices at 3-R Tiger Drive.  We are now located near the main office of the Fowler School.  Forms will be available for download on our website starting April 28.  No forms will be accepted until May 1.  There is no fee increase this year.  $270.00 for the first student; $220 for the second or more students.  Late fee:  $30.00 for registrations after June 30.

Note:  if you have a student entering 7th grade at a distance of 2 miles or more, you must now pay the fee.

In an effort to streamline the Superintendent’s Notes, I will provide important upcoming events or announcements that have already been posted in previous Superintendent’s Notes in this section.

The 5th Annual Acton-Boxborough-Maynard PMC KIDS Bike Ride 

This event will take place on June 4, 2017 from 8:30 – 12:00 pm at NARA Park in Acton. PMC KIDS Bike Rides became an official PMC program in 2005 as a way to include young cyclists in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge’s mission of raising money for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. These rides enable children between the ages of 3 and 13 to ride their bikes and solicit sponsors to donate money to cancer research. 100% of all money raised at this event and by the children will go directly to Dana Farber via the PMC.

Last year we had almost 200 riders and raised over $30,000! The event will include the ride, food, multiple kid’s activities, a kid’s chance and silent auction! AutisticSelf Advocacy Network 5K Charity Walk/Run

"Calling all runners for the Autism Acceptance 5K this April 30th at 9am! School Pesticide Notification

This notification is being sent to you in conformance with the Children’s & Families Protection Act (Chapter 85 of the Acts of 2000).  The Act requires we notify you when pesticides are applied on the outside of public and private schools, day care centers and school age child care programs.

We are having Fowler School, 3 Tiger Drive and Green Meadow Elementary School, 5 Tiger Drive,  treated with the Sentricon Termite Baiting System in response to the presence of termites.  We selected this treatment method to reduce risk and hazard to our student population and staff.  At various times during the course of the year, the Waltham Services Company may remove monitoring devices placed below ground in plastic holding stations and replace them with baits lethal to termites.  The pesticide bait is non-volatile and not accessible or visible from above.

The Tiger Trot Fundraiser

Green Meadow is holding its annual Tiger Trot fundraiser on May 6.  The GM PTO will be holding an online camp auction early to help families get a jump start on planning your summer camp plans for the kids!  The camp auction is open to all families in Maynard Public Schools and is open April 4 - 14

The Prom

The event of the year is the Roaring Twenties prom which will take place on Friday, 5/12, at the Westin Hotel in Waltham. Tickets will be on sale Monday, 4/3 to Friday, 4/14 during first and third lunches. The cost of the tickets if $65. Only students with their dues up-to-date will be able to purchase the tickets.

Thinking about how to get to the prom and back? If there is enough interest, we will provide either a coach bus or a school bus. If there are 55 people on the bus, the price is only $6 for the school bus and only $15 for the coach bus. Please indicate your interest at the time of the ticket purchase.

Meals on Wheels Volunteers Needed

The Meals on Wheels program of Minuteman Senior Services provides a hot lunch to homebound seniors.  We deliver every Monday - Friday, excluding holidays.  These meals assist the older adult who is not capable of preparing at least one hot nutritious meal a day.  Presently, we have a need for a few more drivers to deliver in Maynard.  Do you have an hour or more to spare once a week or every other week?  For more information on volunteering, or to apply, call  781-221-7093, email volunteer@minutemansenior.org, or check out our website at www.minutemansenior.org  Thank you!

Community Preservation Committee (CPC) Updates

I attended the CPC meeting last Wednesday night.  Principal Dankner, DPW Director Aaron Miklosko, and members of the Green Meadow Playground Committee and Youth Soccer were also in attendance.  We were all grateful that the CPC voted in support of proposing the funding of two important projects that will greatly enhance the activities of the children in our school and greater community. 

The first project discussed was the Green Meadow playground which has already received town funding for the site work that needs to be done.  The CPC funds in addition to School Committee approved funds will be used to add equipment that is age appropriate and inclusive for all students to use, including students with mobility needs.  Research that has been reviewed by the School Committee identifies that the increased physical activity and play at the elementary level improves health, creativity, and academic success.

The second project is improvements to the Fowler fields.  These fields serve a significant number of students and residents in our soccer programs and need proper drainage and grading to be improved. The research shows that scholar athletes' gain important 21st century skills in team building, commitment, and leadership.  Scholar athletes' tend to perform better academically as well.

It is important to note that the CPC approval is to recommend the funding of all of their approved projects at Town Meeting.  The funding will only occur if the residents approve the CPC warrant article at the Town Meeting.  Town Meeting will be held on May 15th 2017

Budget Time line

At one of  our committee meetings a parent suggested that we share the time line in regard to the budget process.  The School Committee reviews budgetary concerns at almost every meeting.  We were also asked to share the town budget time line.  The town budget timeline is as follows:

FY18 Budget Document finalized and adopted by Board of Selectmen
