Community Preservation Committee (CPC) Updates
I attended the CPC meeting last Wednesday night. Principal Dankner, DPW Director Aaron Miklosko, and members of the Green Meadow Playground Committee and Youth Soccer were also in attendance. We were all grateful that the CPC voted in support of proposing the funding of two important projects that will greatly enhance the activities of the children in our school and greater community.
The first project discussed was the Green Meadow playground which has already received town funding for the site work that needs to be done. The CPC funds in addition to School Committee approved funds will be used to add equipment that is age appropriate and inclusive for all students to use, including students with mobility needs. Research that has been reviewed by the School Committee identifies that the increased physical activity and play at the elementary level improves health, creativity, and academic success.
The second project is improvements to the Fowler fields. These fields serve a significant number of students and residents in our soccer programs and need proper drainage and grading to be improved. The research shows that scholar athletes' gain important 21st century skills in team building, commitment, and leadership. Scholar athletes' tend to perform better academically as well.
It is important to note that the CPC approval is to recommend the funding of all of their approved projects at Town Meeting. The funding will only occur if the residents approve the CPC warrant article at the Town Meeting. Town Meeting will be held on May 15th 2017

Guest Author Visit Contest
Green Meadow Kindergarten Teacher, Samatha Mazeika has asked me to post the following message about a Jan Brett Visit contest:
"Every year my kindergarten students and I do an author study on Jan Brett. It is so much fun to see the enjoyment they experience as we explore Jan's books and discover her unique and creative style of writing and illustrating. If my school wins this contest, my students, in addition to all the children at my school, would have the rare and exciting opportunity to meet this extremely talented author/illustrator in person! I'm not going to lie; I might not be able to contain my own excitement!
Please vote for my school:
5 Tiger Drive
Maynard, MA 01754
Some schools have had a jump start, but every vote counts! We only have until April 3, so please get your vote in and help my school meet this amazing author/illustrator! Thank you!" One entry can be made per email address, so if you could spread word to family and friends, that would be great! You can Google “Jan Brett school visit contest”, or copy and paste the link I provided:
Thank you for your support,
The Katherine K. Lalli Memorial Scholarship
As many of you are aware, Katherine Lalli passed away on Christmas Eve morning in an automobile accident in Lancaster. Not only was she educated through the Maynard school system, but her family has always been very involved in the Maynard community. Her parents provide programs through Music Together of Assabet Valley, enjoyed by children in the communities of Maynard, Acton, Concord, Sudbury, and beyond.
For those of you who are looking for a way to honor the memory of Katherine Lalli, the Class of 2012 and the MHS Best Buddies Program are creating a scholarship fund for graduating seniors. The scholarship will benefit students who are pursuing a degree in early childhood education or special education, both passions of Katherine's. Katherine was a graduate of the Maynard High School Class of 2012 and earned an Associate's Degree in early childhood education from Middlesex Community College.
"Remembered for her compassion and her free spirit, Katherine was very social and had friends everywhere. She had a special gift for connecting with people, young and old, especially those with special needs. She made sure to attend family gatherings, and her father loved working with her in Sudbury, MA, on a program that Katherine developed for autistic children which included music."
Please make checks payable to "Town of Maynard." Include "Katherine K. Lalli Memorial Scholarship" on the memo line.
