Snow Days /Delayed Openings/Early Emergency Dismissals
The forecast for this weekend may include some snow. Inevitably, school cancellations are a reality in New England. To prepare for the potential of a school cancellation due to inclement weather, I wanted to share the process on this blog for students and parents.
In the event that school is canceled or delayed due to inclement weather or any other reason, the Maynard Public Schools will provide notice for parents and students via the following:
1. An automated phone call to each home between 6:00-6:30 a.m. or in rare instances, the evening before. This phone call is based on the home phone number provided on the student‘s emergency contacts form filled out at the beginning of the year and the phone numbers in iParent. Parents need to be sure their child‘s school has the correct phone and email contact information.
2. Traditional television and radio Media. We use only WBZ TV – Channel 4 and Radio 1030AM (WBZ) 44. They also post this information on their website at:

Please do not call the Fire or Police Department for School Information. DO NOT CALL "911".
In the event of a delayed opening, school will open two (2) hours after the regular starting time. School will be dismissed at the usual time on delayed opening days. If there is a delayed opening, no breakfast will be served on those days. Occasionally a delayed opening will be later revised to a no school announcement if conditions worsen. Please stay tuned to the TV or radio for a possible cancellation notice after a delayed opening announcement or listen for the town whistle.
Early Emergency Dismissal
In the event that an emergency early dismissal is required, the Maynard Public Schools will make every effort to contact parents via a mass notification through iPass including automated phone calls and emails.
Save The Date
Maynard Special Town meeting will take place at the Fowler Auditorium on January 9th, 2017. An article to fund repairs to the Green Meadow playground will be up for a vote. Please come and let your voice be heard.
The Maynard High School National Honor Society Students will provide on site babysitting. The students will meet families at the Fowler School Assembly Hall entrance beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The students will play games, read to them and do arts and crafts with the children. *Please note that children should be toilet trained.
Strategies For Students With Anxiety by Jessica Minahan
SEPAC brought Jessica Minahan to present in Maynard a couple years ago. I have recently seen her speak at several conferences recently as well. She is an amazing speaker on a very important topic!
She will be coming back to our area on Wednesday December 14, 2016 to present Strategies For Students With Anxiety. The event will be between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm at RJ Grey Junior High Auditorium on 16 Charter Road in Acton. Future Ready Schools
Recently, Computer Science Teacher Mark Sinopoli attended the Future Ready Schools conference in Boston. At this conference, he attended sessions conducted by national leaders in educational technology. One of his takeaways was to try to communicate more with the community using technology, specifically social media.
Mark has started a Twitter account (@fs_compsci ) to share some of the activities and accomplishments of students in Computer Science. By using the hashtag #MaynardLearns and #FSLearns anyone in the world can see what is happening in Computer Science at Fowler School!
Maynard's 50th Annual Olde Fashioned Christmas Parade

At our last school committee meeting a parent suggested that we share the time lines in regard to the budget process. The School Committee reviews budgetary concerns at almost every meeting.
The next two school committee meetings will have presentations from the principals, school councils members and curriculum director in regard to the FY18 budget proposal. These discussions and decisions will be made at the next two school committee meetings on December 1, 2016 and December 15, 2016.
We were also asked to share the Town budget time lines. The Town Budget Timeline is as follows:

Town Administration meets with Department Heads to discus FY18 Budget
February 11, 2017
FY 18 Joint Budget Meeting (including the Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee, the School Committee, and all Town Administration) at the Maynard Public Library.
Feb - March
Finance Committee meets with each town department (including Police, Fire, DPW, Library, Schools, and General Government)
March 21, 2017
FY18 Budget Document finalized and adopted by Board of Selectmen
May 5, 2017
