Superintendent's Notes

Happy Holiday

I would like to remind our school community that this year we will not have a half day of school on the day before Thanksgiving.  There will be no school tomorrow 11/23/16.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.  I must confess, the traditional foods prepared for thanksgiving celebrations is one of my favorite treats. :)  Of course, the best part of Thanksgiving homecomings is rekindling of relationships.  The time shared with family, friends, and colleagues is rejuvenating.

I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday

Future Ready Schools

Recently, Computer Science Teacher Mark Sinopoli attended the Future Ready Schools conference in Boston.  At this conference, he attended sessions conducted by national leaders in educational technology.  One of his takeaways was to try to communicate more with the community using technology, specifically social media.

Mark has started a Twitter account (@fs_compsci ) to share some of the activities and accomplishments of students in Computer Science.  By using the hashtag #MaynardLearns and #FSLearns anyone in the world can see what is happening in Computer Science at Fowler School!

Maynard's 50th Annual Olde Fashioned Christmas Parade

"Golden Memories of Christmas Past" is sponsored by the Maynard Rotary Club.  This year the parade will be at 2:00 pm on Sunday December 4, 2016.

To sponsor or participate with a float, walking unit, or band, please contact Nancy Quinn at (617) 515-0897.   If email is more convenient, she can be contacted at:

Congratulations to All of the Maynard High School Music Students

The madrigal group has been asked to sing at the Providence Bruins game on Jan. 27th.

Thirteen students practiced some very difficult music in hopes of auditioning and making Sr. Districts in music.  Seven of the thirteen were accepted!  Three of the students received such a high score, they will be auditioning in January for All-States.

This is the list of  students who were accepted this year:
Adam Berry, Karima Haddouch, Alyssa Ray, Dante Naylor, Zoe Pepin, Lucas Pepin, Charlie Neuhauser (Adam, Karima and Lucas are the ones that will also be auditioning for All-State).

Important Events and Reminders:
In an effort to streamline the Superintendent’s Notes, I will provide important upcoming events or announcements that have already been posted in previous Superintendent’s Notes in this section.

Budget Time lines

At our last school committee meeting a parent suggested that we share the time lines in regard to the budget process.  The School Committee reviews budgetary concerns at almost every meeting.

The next two school committee meetings will have presentations from the principals, school councils members and curriculum director in regard to the FY18 budget proposal.   These discussions and decisions will be made at the next two school committee meetings on December 1, 2016 and December 15, 2016.

We were also asked to share the Town budget time lines.  The Town Budget Timeline is as follows:

January 3, 2017
Department Budgets Due to the Town Administrator

Jan - Feb
Town Administration meets with Department Heads to discus FY18 Budget

February 11, 2017
FY 18 Joint Budget Meeting (including the Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee, the School Committee, and all Town Administration) at the Maynard Public Library.

Feb - March
Finance Committee meets with each town department (including Police, Fire, DPW, Library, Schools, and General Government)

March 21, 2017
FY18 Budget Document finalized and adopted by Board of Selectmen

All of these meetings are posted and open to the public as well.
