Superintendent's Notes

2016 Summer Updates

The Maynard Public Schools are vibrant and busy in the summer months as well as during the school year.  With our ESY program and College Gate there is a lot of learning going on.  In the central office we are working on preparations for the next school including hiring many staff, scheduling, program oversight, program expansions, etc.

Usually much of the planning is not newsworthy.  However this summer we have an exciting student/family initiative as well as a very important hiring decision that should be shared sooner than later.

I am so excited about the upcoming 2016-2017 school year that I am counting the days until August 31st when our staff and students will be starting the school year together!  I believe there are 32 more calendar days between now and then. :)

Cross Country Fundraiser

Currently, Maynard has no Varsity Cross Country team.  However, a committed group of student athletes plan to change that. A club team is now forming and reaching for varsity status. Cross Country is a no-cut Fall sport open to boys and girls in grades 7-12. This is a great opportunity for your student to be part of a team, build new traditions, and push the envelope of their own speed and fitness goals. For more information about joining the team, contact Kevin Caruso at:

If the team can raise $5000, the district will authorize the team in forming a grade 7-12 Varsity cross-country squad. They’re activity crowdfunding at:

They are well on their way toward their goal. All contributions are tax-deductible, and every bit helps! For those who’d rather contribute by check, checks payable to "Maynard Public Schools" can also be mailed c/o Julie Berry, P.O. Box 23, Stow, MA 01775. If they do not reach our goal, all checks will be returned.

They’re also hosting a Fundraising Pizza Night at Papa Gino’s in Stow on Friday, July 29, from 5-9. Mention you’re there to support Maynard Cross Country, and 20% of your food order will go to the team. They’re also seeking donated silent auction items, and corporate sponsors. Sponsorships and recognition opportunities are available for contributors, including prominent name or logo placement on shirts and sweatshirts, banners, and the website we’re creating.

Introduction to the New Director of Students Services in Maynard

I am excited to announce that the School Committee has appointed Carol Riccardi-Gahan as the new Director of Student Services.  She is a veteran educator with years of experience in Special Education teaching and administration.  She has been a director of Student Services for over a decade in three other communities including Blackstone, Norfolk, and Uxbridge Ma.  This gives her a wealth of experience to draw upon.

She has already been in the district several days a week for the month of July before her official date of hire on August 1, 2016.  She has been getting to know some of our staff and our programming.  During the summer months there are many critical Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) reports and other concerns that need to be resolved.  I have already been impressed with her child-centered decision-making and her proactive resolutions to the concerns that have come up so far.

I have also been impressed with her personable nature.  I feel that she will be able to collaborate effectively with the school community of Maynard as we seek to help all of our students succeed.

Important Events and Reminders:
In an effort to streamline the Superintendent’s Notes, I will provide important upcoming events or announcements that have already been posted in previous Superintendent’s Notes in this section.

International Exchange Program

Educatius International is seeking a host family for a female student from Brazil who will be here for the first semester only.  She is sixteen years old and is hoping to live with a Jewish family, however that is not mandatory, and we can make arrangements for her to attend a synagogue with another family.  She is very excited to be coming to Maynard so she can improve her English language skills and live in the “countryside” where there are farms and horse stables.  She is looking forward to experiencing a school that is very different from hers in Brazil.

Educatius reimburses host families $800 per month for their expenses, and because it is considered a reimbursement no taxes are taken out.  Please contact MaryEllen McCarthy for more information.
