Fowler Mural Project
The mural project began as an interdisciplinary project between the Fowler Art and Spanish teachers, Mr Perham and Mrs. Padalino, This project was one of the grade 7 zone time options. Students were selected using several criteria (the results of a student interest survey, their need for other enrichment/intervention, and the previous enrichment/intervention during zone.). The mural group activities included:
-Studying existing Fowler murals and art displays to select a unique theme
-Working in teams/small groups by continent to select landscape and symbol that represented their continent
-Researching the history and importance of each symbol, landscape and flag
-Designing several rough drafts of artwork for their continent
-Working as a group to integrate designs/ideas from the rough drafts of all continents
-Creating a scale model draft on banner paper
-Creating overhead transparencies to project final draft ideas on the wall
-Tracing images on the wall in pencil
-Painting the mural
They ran out of zone time before the mural was completed. Our dedicated teachers worked with small groups of students who volunteered their time to stay after school to complete the mural before the end of the school year.
Here is a student designed Blog by Hazelyn Aroian that documents the entire process:
2015-16 Has Been Great and 2016-17 Will Be Even Better
Thank you to all of our families, staff, and friends of the Maynard School Community. As you can see in the picture above, our students and staff are achieving amazing accomplishments. That demonstration of the enrichment taking place in Zone Time is just one example of the many great initiatives that have happened this school year.
I wish everyone a peaceful, restful, and safe summer. This year has been great but I predict that next year will be even better!
Important Events and Reminders:
In an effort to streamline the Superintendent’s Notes, I will provide important upcoming events or announcements that have already been posted in previous Superintendent’s Notes in this section.
International Exchange Program
Educatius International is seeking a host family for a female student from Brazil who will be here for the first semester only. She is sixteen years old and is hoping to live with a Jewish family, however that is not mandatory, and we can make arrangements for her to attend a synagogue with another family. She is very excited to be coming to Maynard so she can improve her English language skills and live in the “countryside” where there are farms and horse stables. She is looking forward to experiencing a school that is very different from hers in Brazil.
Educatius reimburses host families $800 per month for their expenses, and because it is considered a reimbursement no taxes are taken out. Please contact MaryEllen McCarthy firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
