Happy New Year

During this school vacation period I wish everyone a happy new year.  This is a great time to rest and visit with family and friends.  I hope everyone has a safe holiday and we all come back to school renewed and ready to learn.

Special Town Meeting 1/11/16

Maynard Special Town Meeting is being held on January 11, 2016.  I support all citizens getting out to vote in our great nation whenever possible.  Voting is a privilege that some countries do not afford to their citizens.  In regard to Maynard's upcoming Special Town Meeting, I would like to highlight several warrants that would positively affect the Maynard Public Schools.

The two warrants directly related to the school department are S-3 and S-8.  S-3 transfers the ownership of the former Fowler school from the School Department to the Town of Maynard.  This is just good practice for the management of town resources.  S-8 is a transfer of Free Cash to the School Department.  The use of these funds will be twofold.  The Green Meadow and Fowler Schools both need significant upgrades to the technology infrastructure in order to function as highly as the new High School.  In addition, we are looking at improving our K-8 Science,  Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) curriculum by investing in the training and supplies needed to implement the Worcester Polytechnic Institute curriculum called "Project Lead the Way" (PLTW).  The allotted free cash in this warrant article will help us with the onetime investment needed to implement both of these major initiatives.  I was pleased that both of these warrant articles have been sponsored by the Board of Selectmen and recommended by the Finance Committee.

There is an old saying in Maynard "As the mill goes, so goes the town."  There are several warrants related to the business community in general and the Mill on Main more specifically.  I believe that a strong economy benefits from strong schools and the schools benefit from a strong economy.  Therefore, I would encourage the residents of Maynard to go to this Special Town Meeting and carefully consider the potential positive impacts of approving some of these business related warrant articles as well.

I believe that the Town form of government is the most pure form of democracy we have. Ultimately the voters will make the important decisions for the wonderful Town of Maynard!

2015 PARCC/MCAS Analysis

The accountability data for Maynard Public Schools was presented by the Maynard Curriculum Director, Jennifer Gaudet, to the School Committee at their meeting last night.  Maynard, along with 62 percent of Massachusetts districts, remains a level 2 district.  However, Maynard saw incredible gains in several accountability areas.  Most significantly, Green Meadow School met their gap narrowing targets and achieved Level 1 status.  This is an incredible accomplishment and the teachers and students of Green Meadow are commended for their outstanding achievement!

Analysis of Maynard’s achievement data showed very positive results.  On the grade three through eight PARCC English Language Arts test 72 percent of Maynard students met (Level 4) or exceeded (Level 5) the expectations as compared to 60 percent at the state level.  In Math 51 percent of students scored in the level 4 and 5 categories.  On the 10th grade MCAS, 92 percent of students were proficient or advanced, compared to 91 percent at the state level.  70 percent of grade 10 Maynard students were proficient or advanced, as compared to 79 for the state.

More significantly however, our median Student Growth Percentile was incredibly high.  Student Growth Percentile, or SGP, provides a measure of how a group of students achievement has changed over time.  Students are compared with other students from across the state that achieved the same score in the prior year.  SGP between 30 and 60 indicates moderate growth.  Growth over 60 is categorized as high or very high.  In Maynard, the median SGP for all grade levels was above a moderate growth score of 53. Impressively, six grade levels achieved an high or very high SGP of over 70.  These growth scores bode well for the level of improvement Maynard is seeing from year to year.

Accountability data can be seen on the DESE website by clicking here.

The Instructional Leadership Team is diving into this data to analyze the next steps to continue moving on this positive trajectory.  Congratulations to all of the students, parents, and teachers for the hard work that led to these gains.

Maynard Boosters Volunteers Needed

The Booster Club is in need of volunteers to work at the concession stand during Friday night's home basketball games against Littleton.  We would never ask you to work concessions while your child is playing, but hope that you will consider helping out during games being played before or after your child plays.

We are looking for two parents of boys varsity basketball players to help out in the concession stand during the girls varsity game beginning at 6:00 p.m. and two parents of girls varsity players to help out during the boys varsity game beginning at 7:30 p.m.  If your child is not a varsity basketball player and want to volunteer on Friday, we would love to have you too!  Please email me if you are able to help out during these games.

In the next few days, I will be sending out a link to a sign up web site where you can sign up to volunteer at future games.  The concession stand is the number one source of fundraising by the Booster Club and all money raised is given back to your student athletes in the form of varsity letter jackets, trophies and scholarships.  Please consider volunteering at least one home game this season.

Thanks for your support!

We hope you can join us Wednesday night, December 9th for our Winter Concert at 7pm. It's a great opportunity to support the talented musician we have at MHS.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Maynard Athletics Director Update

Wednesday night the fall sports banquet officially concluded the fall sports season. As mentioned before, all the teams had great success. Below is the list of individual achievements and awards. First and foremost however, I am proud to say that nearly half of the students who made the honor roll were student-athletes. I am also happy to say that nearly 75 percent of the fall student-athletes were on the honor roll. This is a testament to the students’ hard work and the coaches’ persistent message that school comes first. Congrats to all!

National Education Legislation

The Federal House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).  The new legislation is titled the "Every Student Succeeds Act."  This is a bipartisan, bicameral proposal that will be presented to the Senate soon.  The American Association of School Superintendents AASA supports this bill and is encouraging everyone to express their opinion with their state Senators and Representatives.

At this link there is a US Department of Education Parent Bulletin explaining the major differences between NCLB and ESSA:
