Superintendent's Notes

Happy New Year

During this school vacation period I wish everyone a happy new year.  This is a great time to rest and visit with family and friends.  I hope everyone has a safe holiday and we all come back to school renewed and ready to learn.

Special Town Meeting 1/11/16

Maynard Special Town Meeting is being held on January 11, 2016.  I support all citizens getting out to vote in our great nation whenever possible.  Voting is a privilege that some countries do not afford to their citizens.  In regard to Maynard's upcoming Special Town Meeting, I would like to highlight several warrants that would positively affect the Maynard Public Schools.

The two warrants directly related to the school department are S-3 and S-8.  S-3 transfers the ownership of the former Fowler school from the School Department to the Town of Maynard.  This is just good practice for the management of town resources.  S-8 is a transfer of Free Cash to the School Department.  The use of these funds will be twofold.  The Green Meadow and Fowler Schools both need significant upgrades to the technology infrastructure in order to function as highly as the new High School.  In addition, we are looking at improving our K-8 Science,  Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) curriculum by investing in the training and supplies needed to implement the Worcester Polytechnic Institute curriculum called "Project Lead the Way" (PLTW).  The allotted free cash in this warrant article will help us with the onetime investment needed to implement both of these major initiatives.  I was pleased that both of these warrant articles have been sponsored by the Board of Selectmen and recommended by the Finance Committee.

There is an old saying in Maynard "As the mill goes, so goes the town."  There are several warrants related to the business community in general and the Mill on Main more specifically.  I believe that a strong economy benefits from strong schools and the schools benefit from a strong economy.  Therefore, I would encourage the residents of Maynard to go to this Special Town Meeting and carefully consider the potential positive impacts of approving some of these business related warrant articles as well.

I believe that the Town form of government is the most pure form of democracy we have. Ultimately the voters will make the important decisions for the wonderful Town of Maynard!
