Superintendent's Notes

Health and Wellness Reminders and Improvements

Changing traditions on behalf of improving youth nutrition is always challenging.  We took a big step last year by eliminating student celebrations during the school day around foods or food products.   However, having these regulations in place for a second year should make it easier for everyone to forget the past and develop new traditions.

This year the Health and Wellness Committee met and worked with the Maynard Food Service Program Director to phase out the non-nutritious snacks in the snack shack at Fowler.  Similar to last year, this change in tradition may be difficult when first implemented.  However, in the long run it is in our students best interest to provide healthy food choices at school.

Fall cleaning is a way to support the MHS PTO

There is a new big, white recycling container on Tiger Drive, just past the high school student parking lot on the way to the Fowler school called Big Hearted Books.  This container accepts Books, DVD’s, CD’s, records (anyone remember those?), Video Games, etc.  All proceeds go to the MHS PTO to be used toward the teacher luncheon, scholarships, guest speakers and other events funded by them.  As you  do your fall cleaning please consider donating your items here.

Girl Scouts Kick Start

We are doing a town-wide event to kick start the year with Girl Scouts.  I'm sure most of you don't know, but Maynard has about 30% of it's town's girls enrolled in Girl Scouts.  That is one of the highest percentage of enrollments for a town in the state!

As part of our celebration, we will be collecting items to create Birthday Boxes for birthdaywishes.org Birthday Wishes help make birthday parties possible for homeless children of all ages who reside in shelters across Massachusetts. The "Boxes" in particular go to families who are victims of domestic abuse where the location of the families is not public knowledge, so these children can also celebrate their birthdays.

There will be a box wrapped in birthday paper at Green Meadow, Fowler School and at Maynard High School to drop off any of the needed donations listed below.  The following is a list of items we are looking for to make the Birthday Boxes:

Cake Mix
Frosting
Disposable cake pan
Box of candles
Tablecloth
Juice boxes
*small pack of plates
*Small pack of napkins
*Pack of spoons or forks
*Pack of party hats
Decorations/Filler: streamers, balloons, blowers, masks, birthday banner, etc
Extra Fun Items: stickers, jewelry, card games, etc.
Birthday or generic wrapping paper

*plates/napkins/forks/hats in quantity of about 8-12 and can be various birthday themes from baby to teenagers

Every child deserves to be celebrated on their birthday!
Thank you very much in advance for your donations.
