Superintendent's Notes

MCAS & PARCC Information Night

This week, several School Committee members brought to my attention concerns they had heard from our community about the state assessments next year.  They felt it would be good for me to provide an informational night since there is quite a bit of confusion about the states field testing process and the differences between MCAS and PARC.

While I initially thought about scheduling this information night with at least a weeks notice, I realized that many folks will have plans immediately after the last day of school on Thursday June 19th.  Therefore, I think it will be prudent to hold this informational night on Wednesday June18, 2014 at 6:30 pm in the Coolidge School conference room to provide the opportunity for maximum attendance.

Summer Family Fun and Learning!

Free Fun Fridays is back.  66 museums & cultural venues are open for free on Fridays all summer. For more information go to the following link:

Sign up for Club Invention this summer
Club Invention is a non-profit program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  The hands-on, immersive activities allow students to be young inventors, and do the kinds of things that Hall of Fame Inventors did when they were kids.
In an effort to excite students from Kindergarten up to grade 5 about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), the Maynard Public School’s FASC/EXCEL Program has decided to run a Camp Invention in Maynard during the week of July 28 through August 1.  We have already filled up one full class and are looking to fill another.
Please share these video links with your child to show them some of the activities they could be involved in if they join Maynard’s Camp Invention this year:

In addition, you can learn more about Camp Invention at this link:
Girls and boys will enjoy this unique summer experience, instructed by Maynard teachers.  I know because my daughter and six of her friends participated in Club Invention at their school last summer and absolutely loved it!

Important Events and Reminders:
In an effort to streamline these notes, I will provide important upcoming events or announcements that have already been posted in previous Superintendent’s Notes in this section.

Student Work Permits

The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office enforces Massachusetts child labor laws, including work permit laws, aimed at keeping young workers safe.  We have learned through the Department of Public Health’s Occupational Health Surveillance Program that 25% of Massachusetts teens injured at work do not have work permits for their jobs at the time of injury.  The work permit plays an important role in keeping young people safe at work.
With summer fast approaching, if your son or daughter is looking for a job and intending to get a work permit, please read this important information from the Attorney General’s Office on our website.

Be a Host Family for a Maynard International Student

Educatious International introduced us to our first international student from Brazil this year.  As we look to expand the cultural diversity and cultural understanding of Maynard High School, it is helpful to identify hosts families before we receive applications from international students for next year.
Educatius International is currently accepting host family applications for the September 2014 school year.   Educatius International offers a monthly stipend of $700.00 for each student placed in a host families home, each family can host up to 2 students for a total of $1400.00.
Educatius International is seeking families that want to open their home to an international student.  The host families should desire to provide a warm and supportive home and family environment and the students should become part of your family.  This can be a positive and rewarding experience for everyone in your family.  Hosting a student can provide you with amazing opportunities and lifelong friendships.
To learn more and apply to become a host family, please contact Jodi Del Razo at or Claudette Rowe (508) 246-7028

Open your heart, your home, and share our unique international community!  Invite an international student into your home.
