Superintendent's Notes

Happy Thanksgiving to All!

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I can guarantee you that I will eat my share of the turkey!  I also love Thanksgiving because after I go to the first half of the Maynard Football game, I go to the second half of the football game at the high school that I graduated from.  It is a great time for me to reconnect with long time friends.  Maynard has not had a home Thanksgiving Day game in five years so I hope to see a big crowd tomorrow!

If you are looking for exciting topics of conversation for your Thanksgiving meal or at the game, perhaps you would like to ask friends and family if they are interested in taking on a high school intern this spring. We are trying to place some seniors in the following fields for their Senior Projects: cosmetic dermatology, medical research (interest is stem cell research), veterinary, animation, and small business development.  Even if you are in a different field of interest, we are always looking for a variety of career mentors for our students participating in the senior project.  If you or friends are interested in being senior project mentors, please email Jean LaBelle at: jlabelle@maynard.k12.ma.us

Happy Thanksgiving!

Notice Regarding Students Walking from Green Meadow and Fowler by the New High School

There was a sidewalk on the right side of tiger drive where students from Fowler and Green meadow could walk in front of the old high school.  Unfortunately that was not in the design of the new high school.  I am concerned for student safety and would ask parents to remind their children that at this point they should use the path to the left of the sidewalk at its ending spot from Fowler.  This side area to the neighboring street has always and will continue to be cleared for passage during inclement weather.  We will be painting lines and put up signs to help guide the students but we would appreciate your help in reminding them.

Maynard Music Association Casino Night Fundraiser Raised $11,700 This Year!

The MMA raises this money in support of the band and chorus programs of Maynard High School and Fowler School.

We wish to thank our music parents past and present for their ongoing support and volunteerism in the form of planning the event, providing delicious appetizers and desserts, training as dealers and attending the event.

We also thank the music staff of MHS, Fowler, and Green Meadow for lending a hand before, during and after the fundraiser, and we thank the many staff members and teachers who helped as dealers and with logistics (office staff!).

In addition, we applaud the Maynard community and local businesses for their support of the event through table sponsorships, advertisements, and donation of prizes and by becoming dealers for the evening. An exciting evening was had by all!

Hi Everyone,

It's hard to believe, but the fall season has almost come to an end with only the long awaited home Thanksgiving game vs. Clinton remaining. We will honor the seniors at 10:00am, and kick-off will be at 10:15am.  As I mentioned before, it has been a great start to the 2013-2014 athletic season. I am proud to announce that four teams qualified for the tournament and two individuals qualified for the golf tournament.

Here are some important dates coming up:

11/25:
MAYNARD BONFIRE @ 5:00PM @ Alumni Basketball Courts. There will be building tours before the bonfire. ALL ARE WELCOME! Please join us for some good music, good snacks, good times, and a great fire!

11/28:
Thanksgiving Day social and tours before the big game! Come to the high school early to see the new school and to see old friends. More importantly, be at the Alumni basketball courts by 9:00am to see FIRE HAZARD play at 9:15am.  FIRE HAZARD is a MHS band and features Jae Mannion on vocals and guitar, Jeff Umbrell on guitar, Thomas Manning on base guitar, and Justin Duggan on drums. They have been practicing hard and are ready to rock Alumni Field before the game!

Also at this game, the student government will honor local veterans during half-time. Contact Mrs. LaBelle at the high school for more details.

12/2: Winter sports start.  Boys and Girls Basketball; F, JV, V.  Co-op hockey with Assabet, Co-op wrestling with Nashoba and Winter Strength and Conditioning Club, M-Th, 2:15-3:30, meet by the weight-room.

12/4:
Fall Awards Ceremony @ 6:30PM in the new luxurious auditorium.

Fall season records and all-stars:

The boy’s soccer team finished 10-8. The following athletes were named league all-star: MVP-Ryan Fowler, Robbie Oliphant, Jeff Gately, and Matt Hickey. Robbie Oliphant and Ryan Fowler were named Central Mass. all-stars. The girls' soccer team finished 11-3-4, and for the second year, grabbed the Mid-WACH D league championship title. Izabella Gubala, Julia Long, Rachel Fitzgerald, Megan Aukstikalnis and Lauren Lappas were named league all-stars and Julia Long and Izabella Gubala were named Central Mass. all-stars. On the gridiron , Maynard football is now 6-4 and looking to have the best record in many years. Jack O'Callaghan, Brenden Dyer, Preston Wilkey, Stephen Peterson, Alex Martinec were named league all-stars and Bryan Kiley and Alex Martinec were named Central Mass all-stars. I would also like to thank the MHS band for showing their support and providing us with great musical entertainment during the football games. The field hockey team finished 4-12-2, clinched second place in their league and earned a playoff spot. Lindsay Eagan, Kimmie Lamoureax, Amalia Luciano and Erin Wesley were named league all-stars.  The golf team finished 3-9, which is a 2 match improvement from last year. Bailey Loughlin and Clayton Dahill  both qualified for the tournament. Bailey Loughlin was named league all-star. They will have the whole team returning next year so I expect an even better improvement.  Last, but certainly not least, the young Maynard cheerleaders have worked hard and improved their skills this year. We look forward to seeing them compete in the future.

Although, the Varsity teams get all the press, I would be remiss not to acknowledge the hard work of the JV teams and the 7th/8th grade soccer teams. All JV teams and 7th/8th grade teams worked hard this year and improved tremendously. The future of Maynard athletics is bright.

I am proud to be the Maynard Athletic Director. Thanks to all for your support and I am looking forward to a great winter season.

Sincerely,
Kevin Caruso

Outstanding National Honor Society Induction Ceremony

I attended the National Honor Society Induction ceremony this week and was so pleased to see all of the students, parents and staff there.  It was the first official event in the new Maynard High School Performing Arts Center and everything from the facilities to the friends were outstanding.

I would like to thank Shannon Moore who was the guest speaker and a former Maynard High School graduate and National Honor Society President.  She gave a wonderful speech describing how her career options increased when she maximized her college experience by trying new things that were out of the box.  In her case, it was trying a journalism position on the school newspaper that opened doors to her career at the Massachusetts State House.  I believe that having young former students speak about there success after high school and college is a great motivational opportunity for our students at Maynard High School thinking about their future.
