Superintendent's Notes



Bus Registration 2013/2014

Bus sign-up will start on April 29.  Forms can be downloaded starting today, April 26, on our web site at http://www.maynard.k12.ma.us/documents-to-download and available in all school offices. The form on the Documents to Download web site is listed as New Bus Registration 13-14 pdf.  No forms will be accepted at Coolidge Administration Building before April 29. The cost is $250 for the first child and $210 for the second child and beyond. Registration is on a first come, first served, space available basis.

Change in Preschool Hours  for FY14

Since we reported the change in hours for Green Meadow School for busing purposes, we had to change the 2013-2014 school year preschool program’s hours as well.  The hours will be as follows:

Full day program:  8:40 – 2:40.
AM program:  8:40 – 11:10.
PM program:  12:10 – 2:40.

Grade 3 Girl Scout Troop Announcement

As part of our Brownie Journey, Girl Scout Troop #72617 is collecting items to donate to Buddy Dog Humane Society, Inc. located in Sudbury, MA. Donations can be brought to drop off boxes located at Green Meadow, Fowler, the Maynard Library and Middlesex Savings Bank on Nason Street. Suggested items include dog and cat canned food, treats, toys, kitty litter, dog collars and leashes, dog bones, blankets, dish soap and paper towels. Please help our troop and Buddy Dog! If you have any questions, please contact our leaders Joanne Tummino at 978-897-3960 or Stephanie Gavin at 978-897-0991. Items may be dropped off from now until May 9th.

Student request for Diaper Drive

Hi, I am a student at Maynard High School and I am helping Mrs. LeBlanc run a diaper drive that is being held from May 6-17, 2013. I would like people to be able to drop their diaper donations off at any of the three schools in Maynard. The diaper bank provides diapers to needy families within our community. It may sound strange, but if you think about it, people are always donating food and clothing, but you rarely hear about people donating diapers! I think you would be surprised what a huge need there is for diapers nationally and locally. The diaper bank distributes diapers to food banks, clothing banks and foster care facilities in the area. The need is so huge that the diaper bank receives emails daily in regards to diaper availability. They cannot keep up with the demand. They need more diaper drives!!

Superintendent's Notes


Support for Maynard Community In Regard To Patriots Day And Related Events                         

Our thoughts continue to be with the Patriot Day victims, their family, and friends as we learn more and more about this tragic event.  Unfortunately, the ongoing investigation has significantly impacted our state capital and neighboring communities today.  

This week long process toward justice has prolonged the media coverage and raised additional questions for our children and students.  After the Newtown incident we had provided a link to a National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) article titled “Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers” at http://www.nasponline.org/resources/crisis_safety/talkingviolence.pdf and it should be helpful for parents and teachers in regard to the events of this week.  The NASP has an article titled “Children and Fear of War and Terrorism” at http://www.nasponline.org/resources/crisis_safety/children_war_general.aspx which is an additional resource that may be even more relevant this week.

The Maynard Leadership Team (MLT) is preparing to have staff available Monday morning for anyone in need.  If you or someone you know requires assistance please call one of the schools on Monday morning and share this information with one of our principals so that they can have someone available for support.

If there is any consolation in the activities today, our national and state leaders have committed resources and are closer to finding justice in regard to this horrible act of violence.

Busing For The 2013-2013 School Year (FY14)                                                                                    

Last year the School Committee approved money in this year’s FY13 budget to arrange a fifth bus This was done in an effort accommodate the number of families who needed or wanted their children to ride the bus to/from school.  Unfortunately, this additional expense was for this school year only, and with the challenges we face with next year’s school system budget, it would be difficult to provide a fifth bus for the upcoming school year

At last Thursday evening's meeting, the School Committee voted to go back to four buses for FY14.  In order to provide the same amount of service currently provided with five buses, the administration set separate start times for MHS (7:45), Fowler (8:05), and GM (8:30) starting next fall.  Start times are currently 7:45 for MHS and Fowler, and 8:20 for GM.)  The primary reason for this change is to enable the school system to continue to provide the same amount of bus seats to accommodate children who need or want to ride the bus to/from school, while doing so at a reduced cost that fits into the school system budget.

In addition, this new arrangement will allow the school system to achieve two other goals.  First, for parents who had expressed concern about the Fowler and MHS aged students being on the same bus, this new arrangement will eliminate that concern.  Second, we are also looking into how much demand and costs, if any, there would be for a “late bus” that would serve children who participate in after-school activities at MHS and Fowler but would like to ride a bus home.  A number of parents have requested a “late bus” arrangement, so if you would like to see a “late bus” arranged, starting next school year, please notify your school’s principal.

SEPAC Presentation on Promoting Social Skills                                                                                  

 The Maynard Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) invites you to attend a presentation on Promoting Social Skills in Young Children, presented by Kaitlin Roessle-Meerman, School Psychologist at Maynard Public Schools. This presentation will provide parents/caregivers with an introduction to social skills. Attendees will learn strategies for promoting positive social skills at home and for facilitating positive peer-to-peer social interactions in young children.
The presentation will take place on May 6, 2013 at The Fowler School Library, 3 Tiger Drive, Maynard from 7:00 to 8:45 pm.  This event is free and open to the public and we encourage both parents and educators to attend. Mass Bay College Partnership News

We are proud to announce that Massachusetts Bay Community College with Framingham State University is hosting a barbeque for those communities in a partnership with these colleges.  This event will include several recurring 15-minute workshops for superintendents, parents, teachers, students, and high school counselors. The event will take place on Saturday, April 27 from 12:00 to 4:00PM. The topics will include:                                                                                                                                  
1.  How to pay for college? /Financial advising 101 (what parents need to know)                        
2.  What are the benefits of starting at a community college instead of going straight to a 4-year school?                                                                                                                                            
3.  I have an IEP: what disability services are available?                                                                 
4.  Using articulation agreements/what I need to know about transfer from the get go?                                                                                                                               
5. Time management/College expectations                                                                                              
6. Withdrawals, deadlines, and other student actions parents need to be concerned about

Maynard Boosters Club

SPRING IS HERE! Clean out your closets and... RECYCLE THOSE OLD SHOES!!

The Maynard Booster Club is, once again, collecting all of your old shoes, sneakers and cleats for recycling! Drop off boxes are located in the lobby of all three schools and at Alumni Field when the Snack Shack is open.  Collections start Monday April 1.  Sorry but we cannot accept: winter boots, roller/ice skates, singles or unusable footwear.

Congratulations to the staff and students of WAVM

The students of WAVM were notified at the Annual Millis High School Digital Media Conference that they won first place in the National Academy of Television Arts and Science
Boston/New England High School Awards for their entry in "New General Assignment, Light News".

This is the first time that our students have entered this contest.  Many high schools throughout New England enter so this is a quite an honor.  The awards will be given out on June 1st at the NECN television studio.  The award will be on display at the studio later that week.

Scholarships:
Maynard Music Association offers scholarships to Fowler music students each year. We have been fortunate to fund over $1000 in scholarships for private study lessons for the past few years due to your generous support of our Casino Night fundraiser.

Students in grades 4-8 are eligible to apply. Students will need to fill out the scholarship form that is available from Mr. Brisson or on the MMA website - www.maynardmusicfowler.org.

Forms are due to Mr. Brisson by Friday, April 26th, 2013. Students will need to check with Mr. Brisson regarding audition pieces and are also responsible for submitting recommendation forms to teachers in addition to the application form. Auditions will take place in June.

Please encourage your musician to give the audition a try! It is a great opportunity to practice how to prepare a solo piece and how to participate in an audition in a very supportive environment.

The Boys and Girls Club of Assabet Valley Survey                                                                                 
The Boys and Girls Club of Assabet Valley is conducting a survey to determine if families and youth in Maynard, and its surrounding communities, in Grades 1-8 are interested in new recreational opportunities that would include youth of all abilities participating together.  Your answers to this survey will remain anonymous.  If you would like to participate in the survey, please complete it by April 15th, 2013.


If you prefer, a paper version of this survey will be distributed through the backpacks at Green Meadow and the Fowler School, or you may get one from the Boys and Girls Club directly. Help us bid farewell to Maynard High School before it is closed forever to make way for a new era with the "soon to open" new Maynard High School.  Join in the festivities of the Maynard High School Last Dance on Saturday, June 15, 2013, 6:30 - 11 PM at Maynard High School, 1 Tiger Drive.
Enjoy cocktails and appetizers from 6:30-7:30 PM, dinner stations from 7:30-9 PM, and dessert/coffee later in the evening.  There will be a cash bar with beer and wine.  Music will be provided by Drastic Measures.  Be prepared to dance!  There may be some additional entertainment surprises throughout the evening.  Dress is business casual.

I always enjoy the reading about the Students of The Month and the Teacher Spotlights because we learn more about our school community this way.  However, I was particularly fond of the article on page 17 titled Rising to the Top: Maynard realtors get a taste of the new initiatives going on in Maynard public Schools, by Brenno Castro.  This article highlights an event that many of us including administration, teachers and students participated in.  The outcome was an overwhelming success and we are planning similar forums for the future.

Opportunities for 21st century learning around Social and Cross Cultural Skills

Purnima Vadhera, the Maynard High School Assistant Principal, has been working with several organizations to create a menu of international experience options for our students at Maynard High School including touring trips, trips with a focus (e.g. studying literature, history, etc.), traditional exchange programs, as well as conference/summit opportunities for high school students.  

Design for Change:
Design for Change is an organization that fosters service learning. Students are encouraged to attend the spring summit in March with key note speaker Kiran Sethi to obtain additional information in regards to service learning opportunities.

Global Student Leader Summit on Environmental Sustainability:
This will be held in 2013 with Key note speakers Al Gore and Oscar Arias in Costa Rica and in 2014 on the New Global Economy in Shaghai, with key note speaker Jon Huntsman.  The students learn first hand from experts on global issues in regards to environmental sustainability and what each of them can do (Scholarships available). 

The Triangle Coalition:
There is a series of programs in Washington for high school students to promote innovative thinking and problem solving in regards to global issues.

The World Affairs Council: 
They believe that education is the U.S.’s top security issue, and offers programs in support of educational initiatives, including:
  • Academic World Quest for high school students which is an annual knowledge-based competition for high school students. There are nine rounds of questions that focus on a variety of international issues.
  • The Global Travel Scholarship is a program that provides funding for selected high school students to travel abroad to participate in experiential learning to France, China, Botswana, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Italy.
  • International Student Summit and International Youth Forum which provides high school students with an opportunity to work creatively and collaboratively with their peers across the state and around the world.

London Cultural Connections

We still have spaces left for the 2013 program! The program is highly experiential.  During the London Cultural Connections course we cover theatre, literature, history, art, architecture, social and political mores - from Henry VIII to the present day.

In theatre, we study and act out the Shakespeare play before we see it at the Globe Theatre; after watching Regeneration, we see War Horse in the West End, discuss World War I, visit the Imperial War Museum, and read War Poetry. We also see a couple of other shows with British connections - including The 39 Steps, with four actors playing one hundred and sixteen roles, most of them played by two men! We explore the Romantics and travel to read Wordsworth at Tintern Abbey, in Wales, followed by a trip down a Welsh coal mine to experience the Industrial Revolution. We visit The Victoria and Albert Museum, John Soane's House, The Tate Modern and The National Gallery and Portrait Gallery.

You will see from our website that we experience most of the important London attractions that have literary and historical input for our curriculum. These are all connected to seminars and discussions. Related DVD's are a daily feast. We go shopping!

The Venue:  We are based in a hotel near Kew Gardens

For Parents: The students often travel to London together, are met at the airport, and are supervised 24/7, so, for parents who might be anxious, it is a safe environment. We are in daily contact with home through e-mail and phone if needed. Regular e-mails are sent with updates of our activities.

• students who are hungry for an experiential two weeks making British connections these help with high school courses in literature, history, social studies and art
• students who do not have summer plans yet
• students who want to add to the resume for college applications with rich experience and strong recommendations from us

Maynard High School is Seeking Host Families

Maynard High School has forged a partnership with Educatius International to bring students from possibly 23 different countries to Maynard High School. Unlike traditional foreign exchange programs that are usually two weeks in duration, this program allows the students to go to Maynard High School for a full year. The benefits of foreign exchange programs are many.  Often times host families report the sharing of culture and values to be a major benefit.  Also, lifelong friendships that lead to international travel is another potential exciting benefit.

Since this is a big commitment there is a $700 per month, per student, compensation offered to the host families in an effort to defray the additional costs.  Host family are also encouraged to spend some time sharing our countries culture with the foreign exchange student living with them. In New England this can easily be accomplished by visiting museums and historical locations on a weekend day trip.

Congratulations to the staff and students of WAVM!

Conflict & Collaboration:  Helping Kids Navigate Peer Relationships
The Boys & Girls Club of Assabet Valley Presents a Free Parent Workshop on Bullying Prevention

Parents are invited to join guest speakers Nadine Briggs from Simply Social Kids and Donna Shea of The Peter Pan Center on Monday, April 8th from 9am-11am at the Fowler School in Maynard for a workshop in preventing bullying.   There will be an evening program featuring the same guest speakers later in April for families that cannot attend during the day.

Made possible by a grant from the Sudbury Foundation, this workshop features Nadine Briggs and Donna Shea.  They each have a wealth of experience working with children of all ages and their parents with regard to peer social interaction.  Nadine and Donna will lead a lively conversation on the differences between bullying and conflict, how to defend and deflect negative comments, conflict resolution skills, when to tell an adult and when it is tattling, and of course the key role adults’ words and actions play in preventing bullying from occurring or continuing.  Make sure to bring your questions!

The discussion will take place in the Fowler School Auditorium.  Fowler School is located at 3 Tiger Drive.

Pesticide Spraying                                                                                                                        Maynard High School, Fowler School and Green Meadow School will undergo exterior building pesticide spraying this spring by Waltham Service, Inc. I always enjoy the reading about the Students of The Month and the Teacher Spotlights because we learn more about our school community this way.  However, I was particularly fond of the article on page 17 titled Rising to the Top: Maynard realtors get a taste of the new initiatives going on in Maynard public Schools, by Brenno Castro.  This article highlights an event that many of us including administration, teachers and students participated in.  The outcome was an overwhelming success and we are planning similar forums for the future.

Opportunities for 21st century learning around Social and Cross Cultural Skills
Purnima Vadhera, the Maynard High School Assistant Principal, has been working with several organizations to create a menu of international experience options for our students at Maynard High School including touring trips, trips with a focus (e.g. studying literature, history, etc.), traditional exchange programs, as well as conference/summit opportunities for high school students.  

Design for Change:
Design for Change is an organization that fosters service learning. Students are encouraged to attend the spring summit in March with key note speaker Kiran Sethi to obtain additional information in regards to service learning opportunities.

Global Student Leader Summit on Environmental Sustainability:
This will be held in 2013 with Key note speakers Al Gore and Oscar Arias in Costa Rica and in 2014 on the New Global Economy in Shaghai, with key note speaker Jon Huntsman.  The students learn first hand from experts on global issues in regards to environmental sustainability and what each of them can do (Scholarships available). 

The Triangle Coalition:
There is a series of programs in Washington for high school students to promote innovative thinking and problem solving in regards to global issues.

The World Affairs Council: 
They believe that education is the U.S.’s top security issue, and offers programs in support of educational initiatives, including:
  • Academic World Quest for high school students which is an annual knowledge-based competition for high school students. There are nine rounds of questions that focus on a variety of international issues.
  • The Global Travel Scholarship is a program that provides funding for selected high school students to travel abroad to participate in experiential learning to France, China, Botswana, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Italy.
  • International Student Summit and International Youth Forum which provides high school students with an opportunity to work creatively and collaboratively with their peers across the state and around the world.

London Cultural Connections
we still have spaces left for the 2013 program! The program is highly experiential.  During the London Cultural Connections course we cover theatre, literature, history, art, architecture, social and political mores - from Henry VIII to the present day.

In theatre, we study and act out the Shakespeare play before we see it at the Globe Theatre; after watching Regeneration, we see War Horse in the West End, discuss World War I, visit the Imperial War Museum, and read War Poetry. We also see a couple of other shows with British connections - including The 39 Steps, with four actors playing one hundred and sixteen roles, most of them played by two men! We explore the Romantics and travel to read Wordsworth at Tintern Abbey, in Wales, followed by a trip down a Welsh coal mine to experience the Industrial Revolution. We visit The Victoria and Albert Museum, John Soane's House, The Tate Modern and The National Gallery and Portrait Gallery.

You will see from our website that we experience most of the important London attractions that have literary and historical input for our curriculum. These are all connected to seminars and discussions. Related DVD's are a daily feast. We go shopping!

The Venue:  We are based in a hotel near Kew Gardens

For Parents: The students often travel to London together, are met at the airport, and are supervised 24/7, so, for parents who might be anxious, it is a safe environment. We are in daily contact with home through e-mail and phone if needed. Regular e-mails are sent with updates of our activities.

Maynard High School is Seeking Host Families
Maynard High School has forged a partnership with Educatius International to bring students from possibly 23 different countries to Maynard High School. Unlike traditional foreign exchange programs that are usually two weeks in duration, this program allows the students to go to Maynard High School for a full year. The benefits of foreign exchange programs are many.  Often times host families report the sharing of culture and values to be a major benefit.  Also, lifelong friendships that lead to international travel is another potential exciting benefit.

Since this is a big commitment there is a $700 per month, per student, compensation offered to the host families in an effort to defray the additional costs.  Host family are also encouraged to spend some time sharing our countries culture with the foreign exchange student living with them. In New England this can easily be accomplished by visiting museums and historical locations on a weekend day trip.
