Superintendent's Notes

Family Fun and Learning Activities

MIT Lincoln Laboratory's holds a Science on Saturday free kids' event.  I have been told they are awesome.  I can’t wait to check it out myself as my son says that science is his favorite subject this year.  These types of fun educational opportunities are a great way to spark children's interest in science.

MIT Lincoln Laboratories is in Lexington which is close to Maynard.  You can find more information at the following link:

Destination Imagination is coming to Fowler

The Fowler PTO is excited to be hosting an information session about Destination Imagination on Wednesday evening, October 9, at 6:30pm in the Fowler Library.  There will be representative from DI to present, along with some students who have participated on teams in the past.  We encourage anyone who is interested (parents AND children) in learning more, to come find out about this great program.   This program is open to children from Kindergarten through High School.

What is Destination Imagination, you ask?  Destination Imagination is a worldwide creative problem solving competition for kids.  Each week, teams of six to seven members work together to use creativity and critical thinking skills to solve challenges without assistance from adults or any other non-team members.  Students develop leadership, performing, writing, technical, building, and teamwork skills as they develop creative solutions!  The team chooses one out of five Team Challenges to solve over a 12–16 week period and then presents their solution at a regional tournament.  The team also solves one Instant Challenge at the tournament.  Each Team Challenge  is designed to be open-ended and solvable in many ways and on many levels.  These are the following challenges:

·         Challenge A: Technical/Mechanical
·         Challenge B: Theater Arts/Science
·         Challenge C: Theater Arts/Fine Arts
·         Challenge D: Theater Arts/Improvisation
·         Challenge E: Structural & Architectural Design

Come join us and find out more about this program!

From The Athletic Director’s Desk

Hi Everyone,
It is officially October, and although the Federal government shut down, the Maynard Athletic Department is in full swing.  On all accounts Homecoming was a huge success. The overall record was 3-1, with both the boys' and girls' soccer teams beating Tahanto 4-0. On Saturday night, the football team won a close one in the final minutes of the game against Narragansett. They are now 3-0. The cheerleaders performed very well during their half-time show and proved their skill well beyond their years.  Also, a big shout out to the MHS band for playing on Friday night. They brought a new level of excitement to the soccer games!  The field hockey team lost, but played hard against a very tough Marlborough team. Also on Saturday, the Halfway Cafe ran a fundraiser for the Maynard golf team and raised an estimated $3,000.  Lastly, I cannot forget all the volunteers that  helped make this weekend possible. The Athletic Department is very lucky to have dedicated parents and staff willing to donate their precious time and energy. Go Tigers!
Looking ahead, we will have an exciting October.  Both the boys and girls soccer team will continue their quest to defend their league championship. The field hockey team will play4thecure on October 11th vs. Bromfield. Admission tickets will be sold for $3 and will benefit cancer research. Please come out and support a great cause. On Monday November 25th starting at dusk, the Maynard Athletic Department will be hosting its annual Bonfire that will be open to everyone and anyone who wishes to enjoy a great fire, food, friends and music. More details to follow. Also, on Thursday morning before the long awaited return of Thanksgiving Day football to Alumni field, the Maynard Athletic Department will be hosting a tailgate and building tours for anyone interested. Stay tuned for more details.
