Superintendent's Notes

The New Maynard High School

Principal Caragianes and I have spent a considerable amount of time at the new Maynard High School.  We have been meeting with the contractors to make sure that the project is proceeding as it should.  We are excited for the parents and students who will have the opportunity to visit the new school during the orientations next week.

As members of the Building Committee and Construction Committee we have learned about the phased construction completion process and would like to share this with our school community.  These phases have been in the construction plan all along and do not represent a deviation or delay from what was expected.  The initial occupancy of this building is for students and staff to begin the school year on time.  However, finish work and landscaping will continue until the total project completion date of December 1, 2013.  This is why we have not yet planned the community open houses or ribbon cutting ceremony yet.

As a result of the phased completion process, we would like to identify how that will impact our first few months in school.  One example is the driveway.  There will be one driveway off of Tiger drive that will bring everyone up to the Athletic Wing Entrance of the new Maynard High School.  Because the old Maynard High School will still be in the deconstruction and landscaping phase for several months, the circular driveway in front of the building and other parking lots will not be finished until late fall.  The single parking lot that we will all be using will contain more parking spaces than the combined capacity of all the parking lots at the old Maynard High School so this will be acceptable.  However, having everyone enter through one wing of the building will obviously be an inconvenience at first compared to the optimal complete driveway design.

Internal finish work will not occur during the school day so that our students will not be distracted.  Although the finish work will ultimately affect the aesthetics of the building, the educational functionality of the building will be in place when we open.  Even in the current phase, this new Maynard High School is magnificent.
